Built in 1904, the Gage School was dedicated in 1905 to the memory of the great Washington, DC principal and school-administrator Nathaniel Parker Gage. The school served the communities of LeDroit Park and Bloomingdale until the 1970s. At that point, the school closed and students transferred to the new Gage-Eckington Elementary School.
For the next thirty years, the school sat vacant. The Marion Barry founded Peoples Involvement Corporation owned the property for many years before passing the school on to Howard University. Originally, Howard planned on using the building for student or faculty housing. Unfortunately, the school was such a fire hazard that it had to be gutted and the university never developed the property.
In 2004, Howard University sold the school and surrounding land to Urban Realty Advisors (URA). Through careful planning and a unique vision, URA is now successfully transforming the once-dilapidated school into beautiful condominium homes that blend historic details with modern comforts. Over 100 years after its construction, the Gage School will once again be an important and vital part of the community.
